"The Grayling"
an Award-winning Reconstruction

The Grayling - 1898 Catboat

This historic classic is owned by Yard owners Doug and Sharon Goldhirsch. She is well into her second century, and in fine shape after an extensive restoration several years ago.

The restoration included:

  • New keel
  • Many New frames
  • Many new Floor timbers
  • New Center Board Trunk (the old one had been removed in the 1950's!)
  • New Garboards
  • One other new plank and some smaller plank repairs
  • A new interior - cockpit and cabin, including a galley
  • New rudder and Centerboard (the old ones had been lost)
  • New boom to replace the badly warped original
  • New toe and rub rails

The Grayling, her name since she was launched by Wilton Crosby in 1898 in Osterville, Mass., was the winner of the 1991 Broadax Award given by the Catboat Association for outstanding efforts in boat construction or reconstruction.
